Dadu delved into the rich cultural heritage of Kyoto, immersed himself in Osaka’s vibrant seafood market, and paid respects in the historic city of Hiroshima. Whether it was sampling delicious local crab cuisine, visiting ancient temples, or taking in breathtaking natural landscapes, every moment was an adventure.
Along the way, Dadu’s curiosity and zest for life turned every experience into a delightful memory. Join us as we relive his whimsical journey filled with laughter, discovery, and, of course, plenty of ice cream!

Adventures Begin at the Airport Lounge
Dadu couldn’t have been more thrilled to start his vacation! The trip kicked off with the comfort of the airport lounge, where the excitement of adventure and anticipation of new experiences had him raising his wine glass to toast the journey ahead. Of course, he promptly fell asleep for the entire 16-hour flight, oblivious to his fellow traveler—his daughter, me!

Dadu stepped out into Tokyo, eyes wide and spirit high, ready to conquer the city. His first encounter? The legendary Japanese toilets. These high-tech marvels played soothing music, had heated seats, and offered a range of gentle sound effects. Dadu spent an amusing amount of time exploring the buttons, and discovering new features. Who knew a bathroom break could be so entertaining?
The adventure continued as Dadu visited the iconic Meiji Shrine. Walking through the towering torii gate, he felt transported to a different world—a serene oasis in the heart of bustling Tokyo. The shrine, dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, offered a tranquil escape from the city’s chaos. Dadu took a moment to offer a prayer and even tried his hand at a traditional Shinto ritual, looking as serious as one could with a camera-wielding daughter capturing every awkward pose.
Next up was the Imperial Palace, where Dadu marveled at the beautiful gardens and historical buildings. The palace grounds were a stark contrast to the neon-lit streets he had just left behind. Dadu’s curiosity led him to explore every nook and cranny, occasionally getting lost in the vastness but always with a smile on his face. The highlight? Discovering a hidden ice cream stand and treating himself to a scoop of matcha.

Mt. Fuji and Hakone:
Despite relentless rain and thick clouds conspiring to hide Mt. Fuji’s famed beauty, Dadu was undeterred. He wandered through the mist, imagining the grandeur of Fuji-san lurking just out of sight. The rain-soaked adventure led him to souvenir stores and shrines, where he indulged in a Mt. Fuji cake instead of his usual ice cream.
Determined not to let the weather dampen his spirits, Dadu explored the charming town of Hakone. He took a ride on the Hakone Ropeway, peering through the fog at what he imagined were stunning vistas. At Owakudani, he learned about the local legend of the black (sulfur) eggs, which supposedly add years to one’s life if you can survive the taste. With great trepidation and much deliberation, he opted for chocolate replicas instead.
Though Fuji-san remained elusive during his planned visit, the mountain made amends on subsequent days. During train and plane rides, Fuji-san finally revealed its vast and breathtaking view, as if to say, “Here I am, in all my glory.” Dadu captured these moments with his camera, grinning triumphantly at having finally glimpsed the iconic peak.
Rain or Shine, Fuji Fun Time!

As night fell, Dadu’s adventurous spirit was far from dampened. Armed with Google Maps and an insatiable curiosity, we set off through the bustling streets and quirky alleys of Tokyo. Our ultimate destination: the towering heights of Tokyo Tower. Along the way, Dadu insisted on stopping at every interesting sight, from street performers to peculiar vending machines that dispensed everything from hot drinks to peculiar souvenirs.
Reaching Tokyo Tower, Dadu’s eyes sparkled as the city sprawled out beneath us, a dazzling sea of lights. The breathtaking view quickly made us forget the day’s fatigue, but soon enough, Dadu’s stomach growled louder than the city’s noise.
We descended the tower in search of food, stumbling upon a cozy local eatery. The “thali” with chicken, daal, and tandoori naan were delicious, but the kulfi ice cream stole the show. Dadu devoured his dessert with childlike glee. Feeling both well-fed and thoroughly entertained, Dadu savored the unexpected twists of his urban escapade. As we headed back, he quipped, “If I get lost in Tokyo again, at least I know where to find great ice cream!”

Kyoto:
Kyoto’s traditional charm captivated Dadu as he began his adventure at a local handcraft place, admiring intricate crafts—until he saw the price tags. His daughter, however, happily indulged in a shopping spree, eyeing traditional outfits for herself and her mini-me, Aisha!
Undeterred, Dadu moved on to a traditional tea-making class. Determined to master the art, he watched the instructor’s graceful movements closely. When it was his turn, he whisked the matcha with such enthusiasm that hot water splashed everywhere. His concentration face, complete with tongue smacking, was a sight to behold. After several trials and errors—and nearly losing the tea whisk—Dadu finally produced a somewhat decent cup of tea, which he declared the best he’d ever had.
Despite his triumphs, Dadu’s adventure felt incomplete without his daily ice cream fix. As he sipped his self-proclaimed masterpiece of a tea, he made a mental note: next time, the first stop would be the ice cream shop.
Tea, Temples, and Shopping Sprees!

Arriving at the Golden Temple, Kinkaku-ji, Dadu was awestruck by its gleaming facade. The pavilion, covered in gold leaf, reflected beautifully on the surrounding pond, creating a scene of breathtaking tranquility.
Dadu then explored the Gion District in Kyoto, a captivating tapestry of history and tradition. Walking through its narrow streets, he was enchanted by the wooden machiya houses and the delicate sounds of wooden sandals on cobblestones. There were a few sightings of geishas gracefully moving through the district, their kimonos vibrant against the backdrop of ancient architecture, adding a sense of timeless elegance. It turned out to be a false alarm since they were not real geisha’s but just tourists who rented traditional outfits and they obliged us with some photos for memories. Dadu also learned that a temple in the Gion District was featured in Tom Cruise’s Japanese movie, adding a touch of cinematic magic to the experience.

Remembering Hiroshima:
For Dadu, visiting Hiroshima is a deeply moving experience. Walking through the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, he feels the weight of history and the resilience of humanity. The Atomic Bomb Dome stands as a stark reminder of the devastation, while the Peace Memorial Museum tells the heartbreaking stories of those who suffered.
During his visit, Dadu also explored the nearby shrines on Miyajima Island. The island’s serene beauty, with its famous floating Torii gate and ancient temples, provided a peaceful contrast to the solemnity of the Peace Park. The Itsukushima Shrine, with its stunning architecture and spiritual significance, left a lasting impression on him.
After a day of reflection and exploration, Dadu indulged in some local culture by going sake shopping in Hiroshima. He visited a traditional sake brewery, learning about the meticulous process of sake production and sampling different varieties. The warmth and hospitality of the local people added to his enriching experience.
A Legacy of Peace and Hope

Nara:
Navigating Nara’s rains, Dadu explored the mesmerizing Buddhist Nara Temple and encountered the famous deer of Nara Park. These friendly deer eagerly approached tourists for food, showcasing their playful yet persistent behavior. Inside the temple grounds, Dadu was captivated by the vast array of ancient statues, each exuding a sense of history and spirituality. Among these was the impressive Great Buddha statue, a colossal figure that left Dadu in awe of its grandeur and the craftsmanship involved.
Dadu discovered a trial pole, an intriguing feature of the temple. This pole, part of an old tradition, was said to test one’s ability to pass through a small hole, symbolizing a passage to enlightenment. Successfully navigating this challenge was believed to bring good fortune, weight loss, and a long life.
Outside the temple, Dadu’s interaction with the deer was a story in itself. Initially charmed by their friendly demeanor, he quickly realized that these deers could be quite insistent. As he walked through the park, deer nudged and nipped at him, vying for the special deer crackers sold nearby. It was a playful yet persistent demand, a charming reminder of the park’s unique inhabitants. Dadu found himself laughing with fear and dodging the deer, who seemed to have perfected the art of begging. By the end of the day, he had made a few new four-legged friends and even managed to sneak in a few more ice cream stops amidst the deer chaos.

Dadu’s exploration of the unique Umeda Building was a testament to his curiosity and determination. Known for its unparalleled design, the Umeda Building stands as a marvel of modern architecture, a feat that resonates deeply with Dadu’s background in construction. Despite his fear of heights, Dadu ventured to the open top of the building, driven by a desire to witness firsthand the ingenuity and craftsmanship that went into its creation.
As he ascended, each step brought a mixture of anxiety and excitement. The building’s twin towers, connected by a striking Floating Garden Observatory, seemed to challenge the very limits of architectural possibilities. Dadu’s heart raced, but his appreciation for the structure’s design and engineering prowess kept him moving forward. Reaching the top, Dadu was rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. The sight was both exhilarating and humbling, a vivid reminder of the heights that human creativity and skill can achieve.

Walking through the market, with its huge animated sea creature replicas, neon lights reflecting on the canal, and the iconic Glico running man sign in the background, added to the charm of the experience.
